Adventist University of the Philippines (AUP) Model House: Mushroom Production

By Rolyn A. Cadalig

It was as a long cherish dream to establish a mushroom production-training center here at Adventist University of the Philippines (AUP) campus.
The Mushroom Model House in AUP.
Its aim is to help nearby communities to learn and be equipped with skills on how to produce mushroom by themselves for additional sustainable livelihood project for the community aside from having organic gardening in their respective houses.

AUP-Community Extension Service (CES) office enthusiastically started by attending seminar workshop and also visited mushroom house at Silang, Cavite. Good working relationship with the Department of Agriculture motivated CES staff to commence mushroom production with the present resources the University has.

September 23, 2015. Under the leadership of ma’am Adelaida Poblete, Silang agriculturist visited AUP mushroom house to see if everything is in place and also to approve if the assigned place fits the production. After their visit they were happy to tell us that it is commendable to pursue this project.
Ma'am Rolyn Cadalig prepared food for
the visitors and staff.
After attending the once a week Integrated Crop Management field schooling program for 16 weeks at Hoyo, learning on how to grow an organic garden motivated graduates of this schooling to add another sustainable livelihood which is related to gardening and this is Mushroom Production, that is why today, they took the opportunity to visit AUP mushroom model house together with Silang  Department of Agriculture (DA) team.

Barangay Hoyo participants, Eugine, Jorie and Jecjec were willing to prepare the dark room for mushroom, placing all the necessary materials to be used for the fruiting bags.  After everything was put in place, screens were nailed along the walls to protect insects in coming inside. Praise God for job well done! May this be the start of a promising sustainable livelihood for AUP’s partner community.
